The Secret to Success That Every Leader Should Know
A great emphasis is placed on Emotional Intelligence, also known as “EI” or “EQ” in the pages of The Prosperous Leader. Chapter 4 especially, entitled “Emotions and Intelligence: Do They Go Together?”, spends a lot of time discussing the importance of EQ, not only in the workplace, but in life.
EQ can be summarized into four basic attributes: self-awareness, social-awareness, self-management, and relationship management. These attributes are further described in Chapter 4; basically they contribute to you being able to manage your emotions, your relationships with others, and allow you to possess an awareness of your emotions and others’ emotions.
In her article “The Leadership Secret to Supercharging Your Team”, Melissa Balmain explains “what sets top businesspeople apart is “EI” (emotional intelligence)… boosting your emotional intelligence can drive team members forward”. She continues on to say that “poor listening is the common cold of leadership today. Very often we want people to keep it short, which often means we cut them off and take over the conversation to get them out the door quickly. But if you want to be a good listener, then you have to actually take time to hear what they have to say and be sure you understand them.”
In present day where companies can be spread across an entire country or even internationally, it’s important to focus on perfecting your EI and applying it to your team.
